Pretty Woman Week: The Dress

Pretty Woman maybe set in the 90s but some of the clothes are timeless.

My favourite being the dress she wore to the Polo Match.

She also carries this cute shoulder bag to match. Its hard to get the photo but if you watch this scene below you'll see.

One of my favourite colour combinations are brown and cream. I just find the combination elegant. So, I'm putting together an inspiration board for the look and the colours. :D

Pretty Woman Week: What's Your Name?

Edward Lewis: What's your name?
Vivian: What do you want it to be?

(PS. I know this post is completely unrelated to the movie Pretty Woman but the quote got me thinking)

Dear Readers, do you give your other half an endearing name?

I call mine, Mr. Wonderful.
He used to be called St Kevin. He is my first boyfriend you see and being in my first relationship I really was quite skittish and he had to put up with my hot and cold attitudes and my idiosyncrasies and I told him one day,

"You should be sainted for putting up with me.
St Kevin, the patron saint of suffering boyfriend"

Then somehow it evolved to Mr. Wondeful.

If you must know why he was reading this book, we actually bought it for my sister's birthday in March. He was quite curious about it you see. He confessed to me that his childhood wasn't as exciting as mine was. (Think climbing coconut trees, "borrowing" sampan to row out to sea, stealing my great grandma's rolled up cigarette to try etc)

He actually wanted to the "The Dangerous Book for Heroes" for himself cos he thinks the book I got for him for his 21st was too small. Boys.

I digress, I originally want to name him Mr. Darcy, my favourite male protagonist from Jane Austen's books, Pride and Prejudice, but he really was more of a Mr. Charles Bingley than anything else, so it was a no. You can't have Lizzie and Mr. Bingley together! (Oh the horror! and yes I tend to see myself as a Lizzie Bennet, call me delusional if you must)

I had a brief thought of calling him "the man" then immediately discarded it.
His chest is wide enough but I can already imagining it puffing up more from the ego boost he'll get for getting that nickname. Surely you ladies can understand why.

So that's why I stuck with Mr. Wonderful. Cos he is in essence the meaning of it.

So what bout you? What's your pet name for your other halve or what would you like to call your other half for those who've yet to find him?

Pretty Woman

Hey everybody! How's your weekend? I hope its eventful just as mine was. Anyway as you can tell from the title of this post. I'm gonna blabber on about Pretty Woman.

Actually I'll be dedicating this week's posts on everything Pretty Woman.

I watched Pretty Woman last night and I thought that it was the most beautiful movie ever made. Its one of the most memorable romantic movies ever. The one that'll make you watch it again and again.

It had me thinking that no one ever makes romantic comedies like this anymore and I got inspired. :D

So be prepared for a weeks post on the clothes, the food, the music and everything about Pretty Woman this week. :D

Song of the Week: Wishing He Was Dead

I was trolling through the web for anything Kate Spade and I saw video (HUGE fan right here) of the launch of their pop-up shop in london.

The first thing that got to me was the awesome decor featured at the event and the second thing was the music.

I got curious and decided to do a bit of googling which was quite easy to find.

Title of the Song: Wishing He Was Dead
Band: The Like

I fell in love and I suddenly had the urge to start an all-girl band. Me the Bassist. (Frankly, I believe its the only instrument I won't screw up playing), Best friend on vocals and an ad for a guitarist and drummer.

Anyway listening to The Like, is like being in a time-warp to the 60s. They're like the female version of the Beatles except a little less 'feel-good' music, more angst yet keeping to the vibes of that era.

If you don't understood that, watch their music video.

PS: they're going on tour in Australia. D:

Sometimes I wished I lived there. Main stream music is quite strong here in Singapore and I'm not really into that.

The Little Black Dress

I've always griped about how its disgustingly hard for me to find clothes or more specifically dresses that both fit my waist and my hips.

Its either perfectly nipped at the waist and absolutely constraining on my hips, or perfect at the hips but so loose on the waist.

I know the best solution is a bandage dress but I'm not into dresses that wraps me up like a sausage. A lumpy bulgy one mind you, due to the stretch fabric.

If you're wondering if this is another post lamenting about the injustice of having a hip size bigger than my waist, you all can take a big sigh of relief. Cos its the opposite.

Last week, I saw a dress. A little black toga dress.

I tried it on, I fell in love with it immediately. It fit me like a dream (altho I still have a bit of bulging tummy but who doesnt??)

Altho it was ridiculously marked down, it was still pricey. I won't mention the price. Okay nevermind, since I practically told everyone who would listen the price and I can't help but brag at how awesome the bargain was, it was orginally priced at $305 and marked down to $120.

I decided to put it at back despite Mr. Wonderful's insistence that I get it cos he thinks I look hot in it. *rolls yes*

Now, a week later after much deliberation and a strange reoccurring dream of me wearing that dress. I went back, tried it, realised I wasn't dreaming when it still fitted me perfectly but still have that damn tummy bulge.

There and then, I said, "Its now or never"

I got it. For $95 ish. It was marked down further.

I am so glad I waited.

Here's the dress with the beautiful beaded details on the sleeve and the bodice. (PS. Just realised that the sleeve is so like the puffy sleeve of my national costume. Haha!)

I have no idea where I should wear it still (I have 3 events in mind) but its always good to have a little black dress in your closet.

Consider it an investment. Don't have one? Get one. A good quality one and not the Bugis Street variety. Make sure the cut and silhouette is timeless and classic so it doesn't pass with the trends.

Oh and I know you'll ask where I got it from. Dresscode, Level 1 of The Cathay. Its a multi label boutique, I saw a Marc by Marc Jacob Bag and Lanvin for H&M shoes. Dresses are mostly Hong Kong High street fashion lines.  Not sure when the sale end tho

Free People February - FP Girls from FreePeople on Vimeo.

I love Free People and this video for their February Catalog reminds me hot sweltering summer, condensation on a tall glass of ice tee, listening to the radio and huge aviator sunglasses.

If the weather becomes hot and sunny again, I'm definitely heading to the beach.
After exams that is.

(PS: Anyone knows the music of the video?)

Make a difference

(via: lovelivfe)

I came across this video on Ruiting's blog and I watched it because of the title of the video.
"The Girl who silenced the UN for 5 Minutes"

She made a strong case, she saw what we were doing then was harmful that only now people are sitting up and noticing that yes, the earth is dying, that yes, we must do soemthing about it.

19 years later after her speech the question is,

Have we done anything to make changes?

I'm not sure.
People can pull out all the scientific datas to make a claim that yes we have or no we haven't but one thing I'm sure is that we, you and I play a part.

But you're probably asking, how?

I've been doing my part as best as I could altho I've not publicly told anyone of my efforts which is a shame really.

But I started off by joining the 10:10 organisation which was started in 2008 in-line with the documentary, "Age of Stupid"

Their aim was to encourage people to cut their carbon emmission by 10% by 2010.
Altho they've achieved that, it doesn't mean we should stop.

They have a wealth of resources for individuals and organizations on how to cut-down and its a good place to start to make a difference.

How to celebrate Valentine's Day without falling in the commercial trap

I heart Valentine's day but I hate how commecialised it is. So here is the Waking Up Famous Guide to celebrate your love.

1. Don't celebrate on Valentine's Day.
Frankly, you don't need to celebrate your love on this day itself. Be spontanous! Every day is acceptable to celebrate your love.
Mr. Wonderful and I will be celebrating it on Thursday.

2. Its not about the huge bouquet of roses, expensive candle light dinners or premium chocolates.

So first of all gifts, alternative less costly but still meaningful gifts to give for Valentine's Day be it for your soul mate, best friend or family.

From left to right:

1. Bake a Valentine's Waffle together for breakfast
2. Get this cute sequin heart brooch/hairclip from Ban.do for you and your best friend
3. Don't feel guilty about buying this couple Mr. and Mrs Moustache coffee mug because you're supporting artisans. For mum and dad.
4. Print out this downloadable stickers and stick on to your lover's favourite fruit to tell them how naturally swee they are.
5. Another cute printable to print and frame up as a gift!
6. No time to print? Once again if you have to buy something get one that supports artisans and are eco-friendly with this poster.

Got the gift? Good. Now the activity. Here are my top favourites things I did with and things to do with Mr. Wonderful.

1. Catch a free film screening at either Sinema Old School or the Substation and support indie film makers.

2. Go to a museum.

3. Prawn Fishing!

4. Cook food together, and snuggle up on the sofa for a classic romantic comedy movie. If the food fails, there's always take out. :P

There really is a variety of alternatives out there. You just have to be creative and research abit. PS. I published this post late because I really had no time to do it and you should watch the video above to find out another reason why? :D

Lo Hei With G+

Chinese New Year is one of my favourite holidays here in Singapore even tho I don't celebrate. Good food, a lil gambling, friends and most importantly, Red Packets filled with money! Haha!

OF course an integral part of Chinese New Year is Lo hei or yu shen.

Apart from the red packets, this is kinda fun!

Anyway, the Gliterrati Plus members, decided to go for Lo Hei. Its an unofficial event so please don't go knocking on Nuffnang's door!

Some of the awesome food. We went to Cafe de Hong Kong at Balestier Rd. Our dear Vice President, Thiang really lives up to her words of researching her food. Basically of course the best source of makan places is Dr. Tay's blog, ieatishootipost.blogpspot.com.

And now for the main event, *Drum Roll*

Happy Valentine's Day

This stamp from ATYPYK is pure genius! Now I can mark all my love letters to Mr. Wonderful without needing to put on red lipstick. :D

PS: Happy Valentine's Day Everyone! I'm in a flurry of reviewing and studying cos its my last semester and I'm in the midst of tests and final exams. Wish me luck! But I promise to blog within this week about:

1. The G+ Lo Hei Session
2. An awesome eating place me and Mr. Wonderful went
(Not to celebrate Valentine's Day tho)

Have fun and let me know how your valentine's day went ;D

The messy ponytail

I'm not really the type to keep long hair, I'm quite surprised that I've kept my hair past my shoulder. I happen to have an impulsive tendency to just go to the nearest hair salon and chop it all off.

Thank goodness, I have Mr. Wonderful to yell "NO!" to me.

Which is kinda funny cos I don't really listen to orders well. Anyway, I did instruct him to dissuade me if the taught of going to visit a salon came to mind as I intend to have enough hair for my school's Dinner and Dance to style.
Oh and also to dissuade me from playing hair stylist as I have delusions of being a good enough hair stylist that I cut my own hair.

Anyway I digress,

I decide to do a quick scan of my favourite blogs and I came across this tutorial for a really cute hairstyle!

(via: cup of jo)

She not only posted instructions on how to go about achieving this, but photos as well for people like me who can only follow visual instructions. (Thank you God for Youtube) Its inspired by the J. Crew Spring Lookbook which is amazing!

Now to try it tomorrow for the G+ Lo Hei Session!

2011 G+ Blogger's Meet Up

Last Sunday, Nuffnang organised the Gliteratti Plus Meet Up.

If you can recall. It rained and rained and rained. But it didn't deter bloggers from going eventho the location was a little bit out of the way.

The event basically covered a few agenda's, The G+ Club, Election of President and Vice-President of G+ and talks by well-known local bloggers!

Of course to start things off, we had a little ice-breaker game involving poloroid, hounding Noel Boyd and general chaos.

My team didn't win but we did complete all five tasks! It was really fun.

Now you're probably wondering, what's G+? Well G+ stands for Glitterrati Plus and basically we're a group of loyal nuffnang blogger's who are actively involve in the community of bloggers.

We attend events by Nuffnang advertisers, attend movie premiers as well as when the occasion calls for it, we meet up for the fun of it!

Its a cycle really, G+ provides you with content for your blog, You create buzz and advertisers notices it and then via nuffnang organise more goodies for us!

So now you're wondering how you can join.

Basically,
1. you have to be registered under Nuffnang and already a Gliterratti Member.

2. Sign via the G+ website!

Easy right?

Anyway with the introduction of G+, we of course need a leaders and right there and then Nuffnang presented their candidates.

If you haven't figured it out, yes I was one of the candidate. And they used one of my Facebook profile picture which then I thought it was kinda funny, is now mortifying and embarrassing. Sigh.

On top of that we also had to make our speech. I hope never to go through that again.

Tea break and then wonderful talks by well-known bloggers! Ben, Esther and Quiqui.

Who shared their blogging tips for us and in summary here's what they said,

1. Invest in a camera, ensure your photos are clear, bright and sharp.
2. Know photoshop!
3. Blog regularly
4. Be yourself

And then we had Dr. Leslie Tay of ieatishootipost.com to share about his book and how he went from writing in a blog to writing a book.
He's a very dynamic speaker and I would love to get a copy of his book, The End of Char Kway Teow and Other Hawker Mysteries.

Oh by the way, the president of G+ is none other than Hong Peng and the vice-president is Thiang!
Congratulations you two!

Celebrating Mr. Wonderful's Birthday

Two weeks back we celebrated Mr. Wonderful's birthday.
If you're wondering why it took me awhile to post this up, its because I've been deliberating over whether to post this up due to the nature of the party. I'll keep it brief because,

let's just say it involved, Porn Stars, STDs and an MP(Yes your Minister of Parliament) visiting.

A word of warning. Have a Rated-R theme party at your own risk.

Psst! Have you heard?

Oh Yay! JUICE Singapore launched their Digital Magazine!

If you don't know Juice,  you need to get out from under the rock you've been hiding in.

Juice is one of the awesome-st magazines to haven been published on Singapore's shore. The best part is of course its free!

Hence the reason why I get into cat fights once a month to grab the last copy of Juice at my favourite haunts.

Well no more risking my eyeballs and growing nails because I can now go online and read up. It won't stop me from hunting down the magazines tho as I still prefer the printed word. (I could subscribe but I'm cheap like that) but I'll be more magnanimous this time round (I'm keeping my long nails just in case).

Anyway, Lady with the Kate Spade (I'd call her by another name but she carries a Kate Spade), you're safe for this month cos I already got my copy of February's issue. :P
